Jamilia James
Meet the Instructor
Jamilia James is a daughter of the rich dark soil of the Alabama Black Belt and the life-giving mountain forests of St. James Parish, Jamaica. She grew up between Boston, MA and Indianapolis, IN and she holds a Bachelors degree in Africana studies with a minor in English Language & Literature from Smith College.
Jamilia is a freelance writer, narrative journalist, storyteller, facilitator, and arts writer based in Texas, USA. Her work explores the human condition, Black art, Black culture, and the truth using personal narrative. Jamilia has taught writing and storytelling to 18-25 year old budding media professionals in New Orleans, and she has led workshops on narrative change and perspective.
Jamilia has contributed to several media outlets including Pattern Magazine and the Indianapolis Recorder—Indianapolis’ longest running newspaper serving the Black community. She strongly believes that art writing and narrative storytelling are powerful tools for healing and liberation, and she regularly shares her writing on Substack @thesourceoflight.
