Through an interactive, close reading of short stories written by Alice Walker and Deesha Philyaw, we will discuss the key literary elements that make up a short story (character, setting, plot, conflict, theme). We will use these elements to discuss and write to a foundational short story checklist to ensure that your own works contain these basic, necessary literary elements.
The Short Story Checklist for Black Women Writers will help you determine whether what your short story intends to convey is actually apparent. We will read, discuss, create, and have a better understanding of the elements that make up a short story.
Open to beginner and intermediate writers.

Jina DuVernay is a librarian, archivist, and writer. The California native currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where she is pursuing a PhD in Humanities at Clark Atlanta University. DuVernay has published several professional articles and book chapters. She is a freelance writer for Sisters from AARP, American Greetings and is a Hurston/Wright 2022 Writers Week Retreat alum. DuVernay's creative fiction has appeared in Kweli Journal.
