“For those of us who write, it is necessary to scrutinize not only the truth of what we speak, but the truth of that language by which we speak it.”
~ Audre Lorde

Are you a writer? Check!

Do you write short stories? Check!

Does your story contain basic literary elements? Let’s check!

Through an interactive, close reading of short stories written by Alice Walker and Deesha Philyaw, we will discuss the key literary elements that make up a short story (character, setting, plot, conflict, theme). We will use these elements to discuss and write to a foundational short story checklist to ensure that your own works contain these basic, necessary literary elements.

The Short Story Checklist for Black Women Writers will help you determine whether what your short story intends to convey is actually apparent. We will read, discuss, create, and have a better understanding of the elements that make up a short story.

Open to beginner and intermediate writers.

All class meetings will be held via Zoom. The link to join your Zoom classroom will be provided on the morning of your class. Please check spam folders if you do not receive an email confirmation upon registration. For more information on how to download or use Zoom, please click here.
